Class Description:

Yoga 1: This class introduces beginning and continuing students to the fundamental practices of yoga including breathwork, focus, and meditation. We will emphasize the balance between strength and flexibility, work on conditioning and develop self-awareness skills you will be able to use off the yoga mat.  Each class will begin with a short meditation.

Instructor:

Amy Griffin came to yoga from a background in long distance running looking for a way to “gain flexibility”. Little did she know that the “flexibility” she would gain would be accompanied by a profound appreciation for the healing practice of yoga for her body, mind, and spirit. Amy has been practicing yoga for over 12 years and teaching yoga for over 5 years. She completed her yoga teacher training through Empowered Yoga in Wilmington, Delaware in 2014 (RYT200) and is in the process of getting her 500-hour certification. She is also a certified meditation instructor who leads meditation classes targeting the “twentysomething” age group. She is a faculty member in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of Delaware where she does research on the brain mechanisms of memory. She teaches a popular course called “Mindfulness and the Brain” along with other neuroscience undergraduate and graduate courses. Amy brings a calm, healing energy to her yoga classes. She encourages her students to, in Pema Chodron’s words, “start where you are” and to allow the yoga practice to acquaint them with their inherent goodness.
